Why Stream Modeling Matters in a Refinery

Converting crude oil into finished products like gasoline and diesel means tracking dozens of interconnected process streams as material moves between units — and making sure the feedstock going in, the products coming out, and the losses in between all balance against each other. That balancing exercise is what refinery stream modeling does: it connects the streams within a facility's process model so feedstocks and processing components can be reconciled against each other reliably — something that, without the right modeling approach, has historically been difficult to do with confidence.

How It Connects to Loss Accounting

This is closely related to data reconciliation (see that page for more detail): once streams are properly modeled and connected, the same framework supports loss accounting and balancing — identifying where material is genuinely lost in the process versus where the discrepancy is really a measurement or modeling gap. For a refinery, that distinction has real financial and regulatory weight, particularly as loss accounting comes under more scrutiny alongside emissions and yield reporting.

What's Involved

Capstone's approach builds an interactive model connecting the relevant process streams, letting engineering teams see how a change in one part of the process propagates through feedstock and yield numbers elsewhere — rather than treating each unit's accounting in isolation. A downloadable technical overview demonstrating how the streams are connected within the modeling process is available below.

Who This Is For

This work is most relevant to refinery process engineers and plant managers dealing with feedstock/product balance discrepancies, loss accounting that doesn't reconcile cleanly, or teams looking to build a clearer, model-based picture of how streams interact across the facility.  Contact us for loss accounting and stream balancing assistance at your facility.
