
The Challenge
Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) operations present a uniquely data-intensive challenge: hundreds of well pairs, continuous steam and bitumen production monitoring, and a constant stream of field data that operations and engineering teams need to see in near real time, not after the fact. For a large SAGD facility, our client needed exactly that — near-real-time visibility into plant and field data — but lacked a flexible, scalable visualization tool capable of handling the volume and complexity of a facility this size. To maximize the value of the data already being collected, the client needed both a robust way to integrate it and a way to validate it automatically, catching data quality issues before they could undermine operational decisions.
Our Solution
Capstone Technology Canada designed and implemented a complete, integrated facility operations solution built on DataPARC Historian, PARCview visualization, and a suite of custom applications tailored to the client's specific workflow. We built out the DataPARC historian to gather approximately 100,000 real-time data streams, with near-real-time replication back to the client's main office — giving both field and head-office teams a consistent, current view of operations.
Beyond the core historian and visualization implementation, Capstone developed several custom .NET applications to address needs the off-the-shelf platform alone couldn't cover:
- Automated Data Validation — An application using system-defined rules to automatically collect and validate critical plant data, alerting the appropriate staff the moment an anomaly was detected so corrective action could happen immediately, not after the fact
- Data Validation Web Application — A user-friendly ASP.NET application giving users a straightforward way to configure validation rules and edit data directly, without needing developer involvement for routine adjustments
- Production Accounting Integration — Scheduled jobs that automatically fed production accounting data into the client's enterprise systems, eliminating manual data transfer between operational and business systems
- Automated Well-Test Data Collection — A custom C#.NET application that captured well-test data in real time directly as field devices recorded it, removing the delay and manual entry error associated with recording test data after the fact
- Enterprise Integration — Custom interfaces connecting the solution to other enterprise applications, enabling data synchronization and broader business process automation across the client's organization
The Results
The facility ramped up quickly, allowing the client to reach target production output faster than would have been possible without real-time visibility into plant performance. The solution gave operations and engineering teams a genuine troubleshooting advantage — able to identify the source of an issue directly from the data, rather than relying on delayed reports or manual investigation.
The relationship didn't end at go-live. Since the facility opened, Capstone has continued working with the client to evolve the system's architecture and automate additional processes. Because the original solution was built on an open, extensible architecture, it's been able to grow alongside the client's needs — supporting further integrations and business process efficiencies well beyond the initial scope.
Why This Matters for Upstream Operations
SAGD and other upstream facilities generate enormous volumes of field and plant data, but that data only creates value if it's accurate, current, and visible to the people who need to act on it. This project demonstrates Capstone's approach across the board: pair a robust historian and visualization platform with purpose-built custom applications that close the specific gaps a client's workflow actually has, rather than forcing every requirement into a single off-the-shelf tool.
